Punjab to Host 4th World Kabaddi Cup in November 2013

Punjab will host the fourth Kabaddi World Cup in November 2013. The Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, Sukhbir Singh Badal, announced here on Monday, that he expected about 25 countries to compete in the fortnight-long prize money event.

Badal said that Punjab was promoting kabaddi in Europe, Africa, America and Australia, in an attempt to take it to the Olympics by 2020. He emphasised that the Punjab government would establish the Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Centre of Excellence for Sports in Bathinda, Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Amritsar at a cost of about Rs.100 crore.

About 2,000 aspiring sports persons would be trained in these centers. Playgrounds were being developed in 1,233 villages. As further attraction, about 2,200 sports persons would be given monthly scholarships of Rs.500 to Rs.1000. Punjab has three per cent sports quota in government jobs to encourage the youth to take up sports as a career option.
